Libro Original o primera edición
Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition (SD; J. B. Lippincott= SD all the way through to 1924). You can see the green covers in the photos. They are in very solid shape. The gilt lettering on the spine is bright, part of a couple of letters in the word 'Autobiography' have some of the green color on them, as does part of the 'B' in Bigelow. The spine ends have held up pretty nicely. They both have little bit of bending and crinkling. The top one has one speck-sized spot of rub-through, the bottom one has two speck-sized spots of rub-through. You should be able to see that there is some color fading on the spine, dark green to light green, a little of that has also occurred on the rear cover just adjacent to the spine and off the bottom edge. Off the top edge of the rear cover there is some whitening covering the green color. There are also a few little creases or puffy spots on the covers, one on the front and several on the rear. The cover edges are in very good shape. They all maintain the dark green color of the covers. The cover corners look very good as well. They each have one speck-sized spot of rub-through (and with the description 'speck-sized' I mean it literally, in other words it's accurate). The page edges look very good. I didn't see any stains (boding well for the pages). The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages and nicely tight covers as well. I turned over every page in the book. I didn't find any instances of a binding issue. I also didn't find any conspicuous soiling. I saw no more than five specks and one small and very light tan spot at a margin. The pages are exceptionally clean. There was a small thin slip of paper off the top edge of one page. It left a Very light tan shadow of itself, not reaching any of the print. The front and rear inside cover covers and front and rear end papers are brown. They look very good. I didn't see any conspicuous corner creasing on the pages, clearly no placeholder creases. I did see some little crinkles here and there, not much of anything. I found one page with a small area of heavier crinkling/creasing at its margin, not reaching the print. And I found to consecutive pages with the same crinkling/creasing, but over a larger space and touching upon some of the print. It would seem something pressed against them. It's not terribly significant, certainly doesn't impact upon one's reading. There are no losses of any kind on any the pages and there are no tears on any of the pages. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments of any kind. The tissue guard between the frontispiece and the title page is in very good condition. There is a short penciled inscription off the top edge of the half-title page. It could easily be erased. It is not dated. There is a reasonable possibility that the individual inscribing is William Bradley Isham, an 'American merchant (leather, 'one of the last of the leather merchants who made The Swamp') and banker' according to his Wikipedia profile. He was ' vice-president of the Union Bank and of the Bank of the Metropolis (New York City), and was president of the Bond and Mortgage Guarantee Company. He was born in 1827 and died in 1909. The inscription reads simply 'J. D. (that's a guess) Sturges from Wm. B. Isham.' There is no other writing to be found anywhere else in the book. 'The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. W. T. Franklin's text was the standard version of the Autobiography for half a century, until John Bigelow purchased the original manuscript in France and in 1868 published the most reliable text that had yet appeared.'.

Hardcover. Condición: Near fine. Federal edition. Large octavo, 12 volumes. A near fine set, fresh and lovely, in contemporary 3/4 red morocco and marbled boards, with marbled endpapers and top edges gilt. Offsetting to one spread in volume I due to a laid-in news clipping, occasional gentle rubbing to corners, and some isolated scuffmarks to the spines of a few volumes, but really a handsome, attractive set overall. Handsome bookplate to the front paste-down of each volume. This is number 5 of 400 lmiited hand-numbered sets of the "Connoisseur's Federal Edition") (the limitation page also indicates a total limitation of 1,000 sets for the overall Federal edition). Printed on nicely textured watermarked paper, with series title pages and some illustrations printed on japanese vellum. An extremely attractive set for the Frankiln connoisseur. Uncommon, particularly in this handsome leather binding.
