Partly because of its rarity, but mainly because of its extraordinary evocation of a land that has vanished beneath the plow, the book's reputation has only increased among scholars, rare book collectors, and Americana enthusiasts as a prime source~book on the lore and legend of the West. When Colonel Dodge first visited the plains of the West they had only been partly explored. As he says in his introductory chapter, what had early attracted him was the legend on the map~"unknown territory," and the words "The great American Desert." Its mile~wide rivers, limitless horizons, canyons mesas, and mountains were to prove an iresistible lure, as he spent most of his life on the frontier. Fortunately for us it was just before this great tract of virgin wilderness was to disappear forever before the encroach ments of industrial civilization. Inevitably, it is a tragic story~that of the rapacity of man in the face of a continent of seemingly inexhaustible wealth. The author's description of the slaughter of the buffalo, which in three short years were reduced to a straggling few from the endless hordes which impeded the passage of trains across the prairie, alone entitles the book to permanent place in the annals of the West. The book is divided into three sections:Topography of the Plains ~ Natural Wonders, Climate, and Travel; Game Animals and Hunting Exploits; Indians and Indian life. The twenty wood engravings and map are reprinted from the first edition. As a footnote to literary history, it is interesting to note that the volume was translated into German and published in Vienna in 1884. It was largely responsible for the great European vogue for the "Wild West as exemplified by Karl May and other novelists who never left their native shores ~ convincing testimony to the power and authenticity of the Colonel's book. Richard Irving Dodge was born in Huntseville, North Carolina, in 1827. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1848 and was assigned to the 8th Infantry After serving at various western posts he was promoted to captain in 1861. During the Civil War he served as mustering and disbursing officer, was appointed Assistant Inspector General of the 4th Army Corps in 1863, and promoted to Major in 1864. He was a member of a board to perfect a system of army~regulations in New York City in 1871 and 1872 Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1873, from that time on he was engaged in the campaigns against the hostile Indians of the West. He was appointed Colonel of the 11th Infantry in 1882, a position he held until his death in 1895. His books include The Black Hills, The Plains of the Great West, Thirty~Three Years Among Our Wild Indians, and A Living Issue.

Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good+. First Edition. 217 pages, frontis, illustrations, maps. "In summer 1883, General William Tecumseh Sherman took Colonel Richard Irving Dodge, his former aide-de-camp, with him on a 10,000-mile inspection tour across the northern tier of territories, on to the Pacific Northwest, south through California, and east through the Southwest to Denver. Dodge had no idea his journals would ever become public, so he wrote openly about his companions and their interactions, terrain and natural wonders, conditions of military posts, life in civilian communities, and what the future seemed to hold for the region and its changing population.".
