"Della Porta s play of passion, ribaldry, and aristocratic rivalry is a masterpiece by the finest Italian comic playwright of the late cin-quecento. Renaissance drama was launched early in Italy in a profusion of works by Ariosto and Machiavelli s generation. By the time of Shakespeare and Lope de Vega, Italian comedy had achieved a complexity of form and content that combined classical technique with experimental mixtures of commedia dell arte style and tragic motifs, realism and symbolism, lyric word and theatrical gesture. Few Italian comedies of the late Renaissance are available in modern editions, and almost none have been translated into English. Based on the editio princeps of 1601, this is the first annotated critical edition of Gli duoi fratelli rivali. A facing-page English translation accompanies the Italian text. In her introductory essay, Professor Clubb examines the historical and theoretical context in which Renaissance comedy matured and explores the idea of an international dramaturgy by comparing Della Porta s play with Shakespeare s contemporary treatment of the same story in Much Ado about Nothing." Brossura. Condición: come nuovo. Estado de la sobrecubierta: ottimo. edizione speciale. RARO. Hardcover. Condición: Fair. Octavo. [16], 534, [55] pp, 2 portraits, woodcut illustrations. Contemporary vellum, ink title. Minor soiling, chipping to spine. Title page gutter cracked, splaying from binding. Pages browned, marginal dampstaining. The impact of Della Porta's work on physiognomy can be seen on Johann Kaspar Lavater's work. "Porta was one of the pioneers of the scientific outlook, not himself a discoverer but a popularizer. We are prone to think today of physiognomy as antiscientific, but it was in fact a way of emphasizing the dependence of behavior on body, a sort of physiological psychology." - Diamond 23.5. Porta's De humana physiognomia "clearly established the doctrine of the correspondence between the external form of the body and the internal form of the person"--DSB XI, 97. Riccardi, II, 311. Krivatsy, 9170. Bibl. Magica Casanatense, n. 353. Houzeau-Lancaster, 5013. Cat. British Library, p. 700. Condition of contents: Good conditions. Occasional foxings. Title page has been reinforced in the verso with paper Condition of binding: Full parchment coeval cover with handwritten title in the spine in very good conditions. Binding in good conditions. Pages in good conditions with occasional foxings. Second or third edition of 1606 of this scarce work by the phylosopher alchemist dramatist and scientist Giovanni Battista Della Porta (1535-1615) conenecting astrology, physiognomy and prediction of future. The date of the first edition is uncertain, 1601 but probably of 1603. The theory of Della Porta was that man is directed not by astral influences but by the elements which compose his body and which also determine the various characters of planets and stars. Human beings and heavenly bodies are all part of a vast system of signatures. By reading the natural signs, an expert can foretell the future to which the indicated tendencies will lead. "One of the most impressive illustrations of the effect of the bull of Sixtus V against astrology is offered by Giovanni Baptista Porta, who had written on natural magic, physiognomy and other subjects bordering upon the occult- In 1603 he published at Naples six books of Celestial Physiognomy, in which the future could easily be conjectured from inspection of the human countenance, but which also astrology was refuted and shown to be inane and imaginary." Thorndike: A History of Experimental Science, Vol. VI, p.162 Giambattista della Porta (1535? - 4 February 1615), also known as Giovanni Battista Della Porta, was an Italian scholar, polymath and playwright who lived in Naples at the time of the Scientific Revolution and Reformation. Giambattista della Porta spent the majority of his life on scientific endeavors. He benefited from an informal education of tutors and visits from renowned scholars. His most famous work, first published in 1558, is entitled Magiae Naturalis (Natural Magic). In this book he covered a variety of the subjects he had investigated, including occult philosophy, astrology, alchemy, mathematics, meteorology, and natural philosophy. He was also referred to as "professor of secrets". Osler 3723. "Rara e importante opera di speculazione astrale". Riccardi, II, 311. Krivatsy, 9170. Bibl. Magica Casanatense, n. 353. Condición: Good. De Humana Physiognomonia Libri IV. Dark brown contemporary leather with gilt ooled design and lettering on spine, marbled page edges. Woodcut illustrations throughout featuring comparisons between animal and human faces and expressions, beautifully detailed with some repeating images. 557 pages combined with index. In this treatise, the author attempted to establish a scientific basis for the ancient art of physiognomy, basing a judgement of a person's character on their outer appearance. The idea has come in and out of style multiple times over the centuries, with its use by authors as a character device, and notably by when it was practiced by "mountebanks and vagabonds" in the Middle Ages. In this iteration, Porta uses animal examples to compare with illustrations of various facial expressions and appearances. Binding complete and intact, leather has some repairs. Spine crackled with chips and wear to edges, hinges starting. Small holes in a few scattered pages (result of worming), a few pages toned with mild to moderate foxing throughout. Good. Latin.

Vellum. Condición: Good. Latin text. Small square octavo, [190mm x 120mm], pp (16), 539, very heavily age-toned with some staining, engraved vignette title, 31 woodcut illustrations, bound in a later full vellum, slightly worn and marked, marbled endpapers, leather title label on spine. Originally in the library of a Franciscan monastery (?) with a semi legible provenance at the base of the spine and an ink signature on either side of the vignette; the ink from the signature has corroded the paper over 400 years with the result being a small hole. The author and brief title is also written on the bottom edge. A later owner was the French mathematician Eugene Prouhet with his stamp on the first blank leaf. [A devotee of the doctrine of signatures, Porta pushed this theory to great lengths. "The illustrations are helpful in interpreting his point of view. The part of a man's body which is healed by a particular herb, or the animal whose bites or stings can be cured by it, are represented in the same woodcut as the herb. The back view of a human head with a thick crop of hair is introduced into the block with the Maidenhair Fern, which is an ancient specific for baldness; a Pomegranate with its seeds exposed, and a plant of 'Toothwort,' with its hard, white scale-leaves, are represented in the same figure as a set of human teeth."
