First and only edition, 12mo, pp. xv, [1], 297; this copy without the tipped in albumen frontispiece portrait which is in some copies; spine sunned, top edge waterstained, good, sound copy in orig. brown cloth. In 1858 the author settled in Douglas County on the shores of Lake Ida, 160 miles northwest of St. Paul, in the vicinity of present-day Alexandria. Here, he met and befriended one Andreas Darling and his wife. Because of the Sioux Massacres, Coloney moved to Missouri, and was followed, at Coloney's invitation, by Darling, where Darling was given charge of managing Coloney's farm. No sooner had Darling arrived in Missouri, however, than he was killed by bushwhackers while defending Coloney's home. This poetical romance was published by Coloney to benefit Darling's widow and children, who returned to Minnesota the following year. Sabin 14682.

First Edition. 10.75 x 7.5", original purple cloth with gilt lettering and illustration, 200 pp, illustration plates and illustrations within text. A book about the various imaginary weapons dreamed up by James Henry McLean, a self-proclaimed "projector, inventor and patentee," whose main business was the sale of patent medicines. These weapons included a "floating impregnable fortress", an "annihilating magazine cannon," an iron war ship, a pistol with 48 shots, and more. The weapons were supposed to be so powerful that they would result in a new era of peace. Includes mentions of the efficacy of some of these weapons were they to have been used in the Indian Wars. Riling 1070: "A fantasy of arms. Literally a book in the style of a patent medicine brochure, but applied to the consideration of arms rather than ailments." A nice copy with mild wear to covers, edges and spine tips, slight fading to spine.

Original o primera edición
Large octavo, pp. [1-4] 5-200, inserted frontispiece (portrait of McLean), approximately 75 wood-engraved illustrations in the text, many full page, original pebbled plum cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black and gold, rear panel stamped in black, brown coated endpapers. First edition. An elaborate, profusely illustrated antiwar tract in the form of a satirical manufacturer's trade catalogue offering powerful military ordnance -- "peace-makers" -- which will make "war so terrible and devastating as to shock every community and cause them to rise en masse and declare that the slaughter of their fellows must cease!" (author's dedication). The author was a successful peddler of patent medicines in the St. Louis area, and, as Riling points out (see below) the style of the book, with its frequent bold headlines, is that of a patent medicine brochure. The imagined guns, torpedoes, forts etc. are not overtly fantastic, just bigger, faster, more powerful, more portable. With the impeccably drawn illustrations and confident writing style, the effect is not comically exaggerated so much as insidiously realistic, putting this production in the tradition -- so important in the nineteenth century -- of the eccentric hoax. Riling 1070. Frontispiece tissue guard spotted and stained, preliminary leaves foxed, remainder of text clean, a very good copy. (#152973).
