Dark green cloth, strong mottling to boards, front board decorated with flower motif but with flaking and rubbing to the white color stamping of the petals; front board's white lettering remains bright; spine's title lettering at head and Rand imprint at heel barely discernable as white stamping has flaked off but "Darwin" stamped in white at center spine retains color and legibility. Light soiling to edges but interior pages are clean. Large bookplate of William Clifford Morse upon front pastedown; crease and short tear as well as small paper loss at bottom corner of pages 117-118; bottom corner of pages 277-278 strongly creased from past fold-in. Binding is firm. A good+ copy. No publication date specified which is unusual for Rand, McNally imprints but Art Nouveau style to front board hints at a date range circa 1900-1910. Darwin's "Preface to the Second Edition" dated 1874 on pages v-vi. Occasional b/w illustrations inset amongst text. Prominent academic and geologist William Clifford Morse (1874-1962) taught at Mississippi State University from 1918-1934 and at University of Mississippi from 1934-1958 and also served as Director of the Mississippi Geological Survey.
