The first edition of this very scarce anthology of charming short stories about the Irish and life in Ireland, with illustrated plates. A collection of charming short stories about quaint life in the Irish countryside.The first edition of this work.Written by William Carleton (contributed five short stories), Samuel Lover (contributed three short stories), and Mrs Anna Maria Hall (contributed two short stories).These stories are based off of Mrs Hall's childhood in county Wexford, and offer a colourful depiction of Irish life during the early nineteenth century.Containing an engraved frontispiece and a further five engraved plates by Kirkwood, collated and complete.A very scarce work. In full contemporary cloth binding. Externally, sound, with fading to the cloth on the spine and extremities. Some bumping to the head and tail of the spine and extremities. Internally, binding is slightly tender. Spotting and age-toning to the plates, and light scattered spots to the pages and a bit of age-toning to the pages, not affecting readability. Very Good. book.

An anthology of stories, edited by Philip Dixon Hardy, first published in the National Magazine. Hardy explains in the preface that he had purchased the copyright of the tales which 'the reader will find rather more faithful to nature than the garb in which one or two of them were afterwards made to appear under the idea of 'polishing so as to suit the public taste'. Five stories by Carleton, three by Lover and two by Mrs. Hall.
