In original jacket with portrait illustration, pink surround, few taped tears, loss at spine extremities, lib. code on spine, sl. soiled, now protected in mylar wrap. Contents about as new. Illustrated with 8 portraits in pencil, of which 7 are by WH Caffyn, and one by Dora Noyes. The contents, both text and these portraits, fresh and clean. The autobiography of the famous editor of Dent's "Everyman's Library", which is pretty much a gallery of Arts and Letters from the 1880s to 1931 when the book was written, as the author was connected with virtually all the leading lights in the intellectual and cultural life of his time. A scarce book. Weight 1.2kg before packaging; overseas postage would require addition. (Book, Publisher, Literary, Biography) Size: Large 8vo.

Emile Vandervelde (1866 - 1938) Belgian statesman, born at Ixelles. He studied law at the Free University of Brussels and became doctor of laws in 1885 and doctor of social science in 1888. This illustration was done for the publishers J M Dent.Prince Pyotr Alexeyevich Kropotkin (1842 - 1921) the Russian zoologist, evolutionary theorist, philosopher, economist, geographer, author and one of the world's foremost anarcho-communists. This illustration was done for the publishers J M Dent.Sir (George) Laurence Gomme, FSA (1853-1916) was a public servant and leading British folklorist. He helped found both the Victoria County History and the Folklore Society. He also had an interest in old buildings and persuaded the London County Council to take up the blue plaque commemorative scheme. Drawing, pencil and crayon 275 x 230 mm Fine condition.
