Rice's first book of poetry, written from prison in Omaha, NE. Rice, along with Ed Poindexter, were both both leaders in the Omaha chapter of the Black Panthers' National Committee to Combat Fascism. Both men were fingered by 15 year-old Duane Peake as the masterminds behind the 1970 bombing murder of Omaha police officer Larry Minard, though it is now known that the men, known as "The Omaha Two," were implicated falsely as part of the FBI's COINTELPRO case against the Panthers. Uncommon; we find no copies for sale in the trade (2023), with OCLC notes 7 holdings, with as many copies listed (incorrectly) under the cover title Om Poetry.

Photograph. Condición: Very Good. Original Photograph. 4 1/8 X 6 1/2 Inches. Original ID'ed Circa 1884 Cabinet Card. Photograph annotated on the verso: "Gen Hudson - mammy peeking to see if OK & caught in picture - age about 8 to 10 mo's - b. Sept 20, 1883 Son of James A. & Julia A. Hudson." The card itself is stamped "R.D. Lenhart Photographer - 18 Vine St. - Macon, MO." A bit of research has been done to see if we could locate a General Hudson from Missouri. We haven't found much. That said, the true value of this photograph (in all senses of the term) is the appearance of the "mammy" in the background. She certainly looks happier than the Hudson baby! A very rare image. Corners a bit rounded and a few spots to surface of image.

Condición: Poor. Album measures 15 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches. 34 leaves, most with several pictures mounted on both sides. A total of 225 photographs, varying sizes but mostly 3 12/x x 6 inch snapshots. The photos were originally in color but on almost all of the photos, the color has faded out. ALBUM IS DISBOUND. All the pages are loose. The paper is brittle and chipped but should be preserved as the identifications of the photos are written on it. Some photos are loose but 80% are still within their photo mounts. The vast majority of photos are from family vacations in 1948, 1952, and 1955 across the American West and are identified on the album page below the photo. Includes photos of Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, San Diego, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, etc. there are also shots from a trip to Virginia in 1952 and a few of Canadian trips in the 1950s/1960s. The photos are usually of two types - either scenery shots or pictures of family members/friends posing with one one another. People are identified by their first name. The family name is not identified. The album came out of an estate in Baltimore and reputedly is of a Baltimore family. An interesting example of an unknown family of some apparent wealth to take an extended Western vacation in the post-WWII era. In Las Vegas, the family stayed at the famed Moulin Rouge Hotel, the first desegregated casino in Vegas and there are five photos of the short-lived hotel.

Disbound. Octavo. 56 pages. The courtroom proceedings as a Black man is charged with bastardy in New York at the beginning of the 19th century. Alexander Whistelo was claimed by the mother herself to be the father of her female bastard child, which she had left in the care of the New York City Alms House. The municipality then sought compensation from Whistelo for the ongoing care of the child "under the act passed 6th March, 1801, for the relief of cities and towns from the maintenance of bastard children." Whistelo denied being the father and this trial before Mayor, Recorder, and Several Aldermen of New York resulted. The mother, one Lucy Williams, was a mulatto, and ultimately the evidence failed to convince the court, largely because the child's features seemed to point to a white rather than a black father and Whistelo was discharged. Ref. Sabin 103312. Edges are worn and somewhat curled. Some soil to external leaves. Last leaf is detached, has tears with old stitched repairs, and is partially missing. However, complete text of said leaf supplied by images of another copy.
