Condición: Paperback in new condition. First edition. 184 pages. This study covers Gurdjieff's concepts of subjective and objective time, time as energy and time as space. It exposes his exposition of the universality of semiotic expressions in the arts - dance, theatre, weaving, and writing - opposing a general devolution of man's linguistic capacities in mundane social contexts such as advertising, journalism and business. His ontology, or science of being, is revealed as issue of the economy of time and use of languages. The three series of his work develop these ideas incrementally not only in the context of Western thought but also in the light of Near and Far Eastern wisdom literature.

Paperback. Condición: Near Fine. First Edition. Titles & contents to front. A great deal of mystery surrounds G. I. Gurdjieff and The Work. Today, many on the path of self-exploration find themselves drawn to the symbolism of the enneagram, and to Gurdjieff's other teachings. Gurdjieff was undeniably charismatic many famous and influential people lived in his shadow, accepting his guidance while changing and transforming their lives. Shadows of Heaven focuses on the relationship between Gurdjieff and the poet-novelist Nathan Jean Toomer, from 1924 until Gurdjieff's death in 1949, as well as each man's relationship with Edith Annesley Taylor and her son Paul, the author of this book Caught in the middle of this tense triad of interests was the English critic-publisher A. R. Orage, who was close to all three parties, and whose wife, Jessie, was Edith's best friend. Paul Taylor's unique life experience has made it possible for him to combine his mother's memoir's, conversations between Toomer and Gurdjieff, and entries from Jessie Orage's diary into this fascinating book. It is probably the first to reveal something of Gurdjieff's love life with the mothers of his children. Several new descriptions of Gurdjieff's voyages with his pupils reveal aspects of Gurdjieff's character not documented elsewhere. Excerpts from Jessie Orage's diaries testify to the magnetic attraction Gurdjieff exercised over those he felt were vital to the dissemination of his ideas. With 16 pages of neve-rbefore published photographs, this book presents a fresh new picture of Gurdjieff and his teaching, adding to his legend a tangible humanity to which we can all relate. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. x + 246. No Dust Jacket as published. Yellow titles spine & front. illustrated by b/w. photo's. Includes bibliography & index. Quantity Available: 1. Condición: Paperback in new condition. First printing. Introduction by Anthony Blake; 157 pages. A trace of the worlds of words in all his works in English reveals Gurdjieff's predilection for etymological and figurative play on words the inform sense pertinent to purpose. Though some readers have thought the Gurdjieff relied completely on his co-editor, A.R. Orage, for his exploration into the English language, this study shows that Gurdjieff exposed his personal idiom in his writing. His puns, recondite etymological forays and historical linguistic allusions, challenged his readers and listeners to question their understanding of his discourses. Comparison of the French, German and Russian texts of Beelzebub's Tales with his English, along with records of his use all these languages confirm an extraordinary command of the English language that served him better than any other for the gist of his writings.

Paperback. Condición: Near Fine. First Edition. Titles, contents & prologue to front. In 1922, at the age of 49, A. R. Orage left behind his brilliant career as editor of The New Age to work with G. I. Gurdjieff in France. He hoped to increase his moral and psychological powers in order to better serve the world at large, and England in particular. Orage went to Gurdjieff to find a way to convince others the value of an economic scheme that would harmonize industrial production, the flow of capital, and consumer capacities. He had not anticipated falling in love with a young American heiress, Jessie Dwight, while representing Gurdjieff in New York. From 1924 until the end of Orage's life, Jessie fought Gurdjieff for possession of Orage, while Orage did his best to stay aloof from the conflict. It is commonly assumed that Orage and Gurdjieff parted ways in early 1931 because of Jessie. But, as this book reveals, he and Gurdjieff both thought that it was time for him to resume his editing career, fortified with Gurdjieff's teaching. Orage did more in New York than represent Gurdjieff's interests. He taught his own psychological exercises and tutored a number of promising American writers. Most significantly, he stirred interest in Social Credit as a possible solution to the financial depression that gripped American and worldwide economies in the 1930s. Paul Beekman Taylor's engrossing account of the relationship between these two larger-than-life figures is informed by both rigorous scholarship and his own relationship with Gurdjieff. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. xvii + 270. No Dust Jacket as published. Black titles spine. illustrated by b/w. photo's. Includes select bibliography & index. Quantity Available: 1.
