Il contient les ?uvres d'un poète-enfant du Grand Siècle, célèbre pour avoir fait publier ses vers à l'âge de huit ans. Le volume est illustré de 27 portraits gravés par Jean Frosne, représentant les personnalités du monde politique, ecclésiastique et littéraire de l'époque, dont les poèmes du "Petit de Beauchasteau" chantent bien évidemment les louanges. Notre exemplaire est l'un des rares complets des 27 portraits: Brunet ne mentionne que 22 portraits, le NUC 23, et Lachèvre entre 25 et 27 selon les exemplaires. D'après Brunet, ces portraits contribuèrent à donner "quelque prix" à cet ouvrage. L'intérêt du volume est accru du fait qu'il renferme, dans les feuillets liminaires de la première partie, un recueil collectif en l'honneur du très jeune poète. On y trouve 72 pièces françaises et 6 pièces grecques, latines et italiennes. Parmi les 54 auteurs, qui tous ont signés leurs vers: Beys, Boisrobert, G. etC. Colletet, Linières, Scarron, Le Clerc, Le Brun, Quinot, Chauveau, Rocoles, etc. Ce Minou Drouet du Grand Siècle s'appelait en fait François-Mathieu Chastellet (baptisé le 5 mai 1645) ; il était fils d'un acteur de l'Hôtel de Bourgogne. Après avoir publié son recueil (8 avril 1657), qui lui valut d'être reçu à la cour, Beauchasteau voyagea en Angleterre (1658 et 1659) où Cromwell l'accueillit, cherchant à le retenir. Il partit en 1661 pour la Perse, et où l'on perd définitivement la trace de ce génie précoce. L'authenticité de son recueil est controversée: Lachèvre et Brunet l'admettent, tandis que Mongrédien, sur une assertion de Boileau, conclut à une supercherie. C'est en tout cas un témoignage passionnant sur l'art de versifier au XVIIe siècle, un prodigieux réservoir de rhétorique baroque. Cf.
