Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Some edge wear, creasing and chipping to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners rubbed with small loss, price clipped, no inscriptions, a quantity of old newspaper reviews and catalogue entries for this book tipped in, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 151pp. The story of the messianic 'prophetess' Joanna Southcott (1750-1814). Born in Devon, and for many years a simple upholsterer's assistant, the announcement that, aged 63, she was to become the mother of Shiloh was first made in her Third Book of Wonders (1813). The announcement provoked hysterical adulation amongst her many followers, and the date of 19th October 1814 was that fixed for the birth, but Shiloh failed to appear, and it was given out that she was in a trance. Joanna died not long after. The official date of death is given as 27th December 1814, however, it is likely that she died the previous day, as her followers retained her body for some time, in the belief that she would be raised from the dead. They agreed to its burial only after it began to decay. The movement did not end with Southcott's death in 1814. Her followers, referred to as Southcottians, are said to have numbered over 100,000, but declined greatly by the end of the nineteenth century. Her famous 'Box' of prophecies (only to be opened in time of national crisis in the presence of 24 bishops), is said to still be held by the Panacea Society of Bedford. George Reginald Balleine (1873-1966), was a well known Jersey historian, Anglican priest and writer.
