Broadsheet cartoon, 40.2 x 28 cm (sheet size), slight edge browning but in very good condition. Satirical cartoon by Charles Green Bush, a pioneer of the daily newspaper cartoon. Here, the two figures, Jonathan (Uncle Sam) and Sandy (the kilted Scotsman) tussle over the America's Cup. The two yachts Thistle (Scotland) and the defending American yacht Volunteer contested the seventh America's Cup in 1887. "Sandy" was vanquished. The note by Harper's Weekly (included in photocopy) opines: ".the genius of America stands impeturbed and undoubting, and .the genius of Scotland looks rather unpleasantly determined and competent.". Despite the loss, Thistle went on to a successful racing career, and was eventually sold to Kaiser Wilhelm II. The New York Yacht Club remained supreme as the holder of the America's Cup until 1983, when the Royal Perth Yacht Club's challenger, Australia II famously was the victor.
