2008 N & M Press reprint of 1917 original Edition . SB 336pp +106 BW platesPublished Price £25 Published in February 1917 in a secret edition strictly limited to 700 copies on security grounds, this immensely detailed manual, backed up by scores of photographs, drawings, plans and diagrams, gives the reader a complete run-down on everything that British Intelligence knew about enemy Zeppelins. Based largely on the examination of two sister â super Zeppelinsâ - L31 and L33 - shot down over England, the book has chapters on evolving Zeppelin types, training and personnel; the building of Zeppelins; and their machinery and propellors; Fabric and hydrogen gas valves; bomb dropping gear; wireless telegraph apparatus; bombs, flares, guns and ammunition; bomb and machine gun sights; compasses, lifeboats, fire extinguishers and other safety equipment; and weather conditions. Although the loss of life and material damage inflicted by the Zeppelins was quite light, as a psychological weapon their effect was profound and induced near-panic, , particularly as Britain had at first no answer to them. Gradually, however, blackouts were introduced, along with searchlights ringing London and squadrons briefed to intercept and shoot down the gigantic airships. The war against the Zeppelin would be won, but before they gave way to bombers the â Zeppâ had left an indelible mark on aviation history.

Paperback reprint of a 1944 publication. 130pp. This publication is exactly what it says on the tin - a listing of all landing ships, craft and barges as at 4 January 1944. It gives a good picture of the types of craft and their location, and allows students of Operation NEPTUNE an insight into the vexed question of whiter there were enough, and in the right place, for the invasion of Europe to take place.

Mint paperback reprint of a 1947 publication. 780pp. : The text of Hitler's Naval Conferences throughout the Second World War showing how he and his admirals saw the war at sea. Only extraneous and largely irrelevant minutiae are omitted from the book. These papers make fascinating reading and show how limited Hitler's global perception was. The book also shows how the German armed forces were constantly at each others throats over resources of steel and oil - without which no modern armed forces could function or replace equipment.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. Gilt-titled navy cloth 13 x 19cm. 132pp. Covers good, rubbed and bumped to extremities, worn to bottom corners, some marks. Binding secure. Interiors with some spotting and marks. Staining to bottom corner of rear endpapers. Previous owner's name to ffep (E.J. Forster) and handwritten notes to endpapers and some annotations in text. Featuring several Ottoman Empire languages and German, this was likely produced to help tackle the WW1 Ottoman-German Alliance through which the Ottomans sought to bolster their military, and the Germans their access to British colonies. Complementing the Admirality's Geographical Handbooks, it was intended for field use in wartime covering topography, maps, animals, forage, transport, weather, food, nautical terms etc, and related Q&A about troops, billets, lodging, stabling, strangers, suspects, wounds etc. The annotations, mainly relating to Bulgarian and Greek suggest a military connection, as words he's translated include manacles, deserter, adjutant. Rare - traced to just 5 institutions including 2 on Copac (BL, SOAS, Exeter, Princeton, Sewanee - OCLC 25471987).

Soft cover. Condición: Good. Original printed wraps 19 x 27cm. 89pp with folding map. Wraps good, foxed with creased edges, a couple of short tears to the spine with minor loss. Interiors very good, tanned with some spotting and light creasing. Map neatly folded without tears. Extremely rare - no OCLC or Copac reference found. Official Italian Ministry of the Colonies translated and edited version of the British Admiralty's "Notes on the Geography of Asia Minor" (ID 1104, June 1916, 59pp with a folding map), c 1917 (map date), marked for official use only and protected under Britain's Official Secrets Act. It would therefore coincide with the Agreement of Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne between France, Italy and Britain (signed 26 April, endorsed 18 Aug - 26 Sept 1917), which promised parts of Ottoman Anatolia to Italy (subsequently nullified at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919). It covers the Anatolian plateau, the Taurus and Anti-Taurus mountains, and access to the plateau by sea (Sections I-IV), and military history (V). The "Sketch Map of Asia Minor, showing approximate course of Roads and Railways" is an Italian facsimile of the British N. 458 - 1917.

[London], Admiralty War Staff, Intelligence Division, November, 1918. 8vo. Original black cloth, lettered in gilt; pp. 556; a very good and clean copy. Second, considerably enlarged edition (the first edition of 1916 had 360 pages). After Townshend's catastrophic defeat at Kut in April 1916 the Mesopotamia Commission of Inquiry was set up, and the Admiralty was convinced that only good intelligence about the available infastructure, man and animal power, as well as mineral and agricultural resources in still Ottoman Iraq was vital for a possible advance into these territories. These handbooks correct existing sources of information and maps, and analyze the country's physical and economic geography. Interesting in this considerably enlarged second edition is the much extended section on Oil and Bitumen. 'In the southern and central parts of this area there are extensive belts of country where the presence of oil is known or suspected' (p. 59). COPAC lists only three complete sets in British Libraries, at UCL, Nottingham University, and in the British Museum.

Scarce first edition of this official British Admiralty Intelligence Division publication produced for the use of military staff in the identification of British, French, and German aircraft in the first World War. Oblong octavo, original wrappers, illustrated with numerous photographs of British, French, Belgian, and German aircraft entered in alphabetical order and a chart in color of the distinctive lower wing markings of each, index. Among the photographs of British, French, and German aircraft, aeroplanes, seaplanes, and airships are, notably, the British B.E.2, British De Havilland Fighter, British and French Breguet de Chasse, French Spad, German Ago and Albatross, British Coastal Zeppelin, and German Zeppelin. In very good condition. A scarce piece of WWI military history, documenting the dawn of air combat. The Admiralty War Staff was instituted on January 8, 1912 by Winston Churchill in his capacity as First Lord of the Admiralty as a division of the wartime Naval Intelligence Department. World War I was the first major conflict to employ the the large-scale use of aircraft carriers in combat with aeroplanes just coming into military use at the outset of the war. Germany employed Zeppelins for reconnaissance over the North Sea and Baltic and also for strategic bombing raids over Britain and the Eastern Front. Pilots and engineers learned from experience, leading to the development of many specialized types, including fighters, bombers, and trench strafers. Ace fighter pilots were portrayed as modern knights, and many became popular heroes. The war also saw the appointment of high-ranking officers to direct the belligerent nations' air war efforts. While the impact of aircraft on the course of the war was mainly tactical rather than strategic, most important being direct cooperation with ground forces (especially ranging and correcting artillery fire), the first steps in the strategic roles of aircraft in future wars were also foreshadowed.
