Award-winning novelists Olson & Bowen were at school together and on the staff of this journal. Bowen went on to write the Yellowstone Kelly westerns and Olson won awards from Guggenheim, NEA and PEN/Faulkner. Bowen does not contribute to this, the final issue of the Review under this banner but Olson's Occidental award-winning poem "Talk" is printed and is likely the earliest appearance by him as his work was not published in the mainstream until around 1975. Also critiques of Allen Ginsberg & Upton Sinclair.

Ringbound. Condición: Fine. Limited Editions. Fine copy in plastic ringbound thick boards, as issued. Distributed as publicity give-aways at Standard Gas Stations beginning in 1938, the total selection of prints produced was sixty (from over seven thousand submissions), and [the two] albums held thirty prints each, hence most extant sets are incomplete--and because assembled randomly, contents often unique. The full color images cover 13 Western states and Canada, and are mounted [tipped in] to detachable sheets, with descriptive fact sheets on the rectos of the mounts. (Later distributions were printed directly on the mounts.) Contributing photographers include Ansel Adams, Ray Atkeson, and a number of lesser knowns. The descriptive texts were written by numerous hands, including Ernie Pyle, M.F.K. Fisher, Joseph Henry Jackson, Oscar Lewis, George Stewart, Nard Jones, Archie Binns, Ernest Haycox, Don Blanding, J.F. Dobie, Irvin S. Cobb, and Roderick Haig-Brown, among others. This copy has 25 tipped-in prints, plus one later image printed on the mount, but lacks the introductory leaf describing the contents. All leaves and tipped-in plates are in Fine condition and not detached. Views include Golden Gate Bridge, Mount Shasta, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, Native Indian villages, etc. An interesting example of the marriage of corporate promotion and public philanthropy. Q12858.
