In 1899 the author organized an expedition towards the North Pole. In spring he arrived in the Norwegian capital Christiania (the present day Oslo) with 10 companions. The duke acquired the Jason, a steam whaler of 570 tons, renamed it Stella Polare ("Pole Star") & took the ship on the expedition through the frozen Artic Sea. The members of the expedition sought to reach the North Pole by way of Novaya Zemyla, and the Franz Joseph Archipelago. They sailed as far north as possible, and then continued their trek by sledge. While they did not reach the North Pole, they did reach the highest latitude ever attained by sledge at that time. hardcover. 1901 First Edition. 97pp, 3 plates, 1 folding plate, original pictorial boards, some light soiling to boards, VG. A very scarce title. Luigi Amedeo, Duke of the Abruzzi (1873-1933), left for the North Pole in 1899 on board the Polar Star. Unfortunately, he lost two fingers to frostbite on the journey, so was unable to participate in the sled ride to the Pole. Captain Cagni instead made the trip, reaching 86° 34' N, a new 'Farthest North' and, as the somewhat ungracious title of this book states, 'Farther North than Nansen'. Glacier Books are experienced and professional booksellers. We take pride in offering carefully described books and excellent customer service.

Cloth. Condición: Very Good. None Ilustrador. First edition. A scarce first edition of this work on Polar exploration. Prince Luigi Amedeo, Duke of the Abruzzi, was an Italian explorer known for his Arctic explorations and mountaineering expeditions. In 1899 the Duke organised an expedition toward the North Pole with the aim to establish a camp at Franz Joseph Land and from there travel to the North Pole by sled. During the night at the camp the Duke lost two fingers to frostbite and was unable to continue with the journey to the Pole. The expedition was then led by Camptain Umberto Cagni which he broke the record held by Fridtjof Nansen for the northernmost point reached, by a distance of 35 to 40 kilometres. In the original pictorial cloth binding. Externally, smart with handling marks and rubbing to boards. Some spotting to the cloth. Wear tot eh head and tail of the spine with slight lifting to head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright with just the occasional spot. Very Good. book.
