FIRST SEPARATE EDITION. 8 vo. Orig. printed wrappers. pp.249-294. Two lithographed plates, one double page. PRESENTATION COPY to the the American zoologist, William Morton Wheeler (1865-1937), best known for his studies of insects, especially ants. Wheeler and Loeb were together at the Marine Biological Lab., Woods Hole. Loeb's inscription is dated I/18/'96. A very good copy. In his researches on the activation of the egg, and in particular, the destruction of the egg's cortical layer, Loeb (1859-1924) was led to the study of the oxidation process reported in this paper. This is briefly recounted in 'The mechanistic conception of life' (1912, p.13): "Years ago I had found that the fertilized sea-urchin egg can only develop in the presence of free oxygen; if the oxygen is completely withdrawn the development stops, but begins again promptly as soon as oxygen is again admitted. From this and similar experiments I concluded that the spermatozoon causes the development by accelerating the oxidations in the egg." A more extensive discussion by Loeb occurs in his 'Dynamics of living matter' (1906), pp. 16-21. N° de ref. de la librería 000291
