This failed 1912 Democratic vice presidential nominee was a New York representative (1911-13), best known as the very first U.S. Secretary of Commerce (1913-19, under Wilson). Addressed to Albert Johannsen, a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" (1950), the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject.
