Año de publicación: 1960

FIRST UK EDITION. 16mo., pp. 11-264 including chronology, 1919-1959. Sketch map of Tibet. Frontispiece of Norbu and Heinrich Harrer. Nineteen colour photographic plates, some spectacular in the dramatic Tibetan landscape. Original blue cloth, fine. Interior crisp. Dust jacket, near fine. This book, the first autobiography of a Tibetan, was a long time in its gestation. Prompted and introduced to the idea by Heinrich Harrer, Thubten Norbu, brother of the Dalai Lama, took four years to overcome his initial reserves over the project and agree with Harrer's suggestion that his story ought to be written - if nothing else to help the Tibetan people. Harrer spent seven years in Tibet (he used this as the title for his own famous book), and first met Thubten Norbu in the late 1940's. Their relationship grew and developed at intermittent meetings over the next ten years until they finally managed to start on their joint project in 1959. Harrer taped his interviews with Norbu and made the translations between Tibetan and German. The result is an intriguing insight into the life of a privileged man in a country, which has since seen much suffering and sadness after the Chinese invasion of 1950. The translation into English is by Edward FitzGerald. N° de ref. de la librería 10197

Descripción de la librería: We specialise in travel, adventure and exploration books published between about 1900 and 1960, loosely referred to as post-imperialist travel writing. Although most books are the first-hand experiences of their authors, we have included books of general interest about a particular area or incident and autobiographies and biographies by and of famous travellers or adventurers. You will also find some books we consider of particular merit outside our somewhat arbitrary date range. Mark Culme-Seymour Proprietor
