Detalles bibliográficos

Título: The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent.

Editorial: John Murray, London

Año de publicación: 1821

Encuadernación: Hardcover

Complete 2-volume set. 12mo. Full calf with compartments and gilt spine lettering and spine decorations. viii, 326pp; 343pp, (1p ad). Very good. Original spines expertly remounted. A tight, quite attractive fifth edition of these essays first brought out by Murray the year before -- whose best known contributions are of course "Rip Van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Of great interest is the bookplate near the top of the front pastedown of Volume I: "Ex Libris / John Ruskin / Brantwood." Ruskin (1819-1900) was of course the greatest art critic of the Victorian age, and Brantwood his glorious estate in England's Lake District. This is Type 2 of his bookplate, designed by William Morris of the Kelmscott Press in 1889, around the time Ruskin suffered a severe physical and mental breakdown. Although this title does not appear in James Reardon's 2012 "The Library of John Ruskin," which lists 2,969 books known to have belonged to Ruskin, much of his library got scattered and reappearances are quite common -- so much so that Reardon is compiling an addendum. Some spurious Ruskin bookplates do exist, identified by Reardon as Type 3, 4 and 6. One leading Ruskin scholar theorized about this copy of the Sketch Book, "it is more a probability than a possibility that the book did emanate from Ruskin (and Brantwood). Conceivably it was something that he might have read in childhood.". N° de ref. de la librería 37672
