This Virginia artist joined the U.S. Forest Service in the early 1930s and helped launch the "Smokey the Bear" campaign in the late '30s -- now the longest running public service campaign in history; he portrayed Smokey in literally hundreds of promotional pieces that encouraged conservation of natural resources and fire prevention. Signed First Day Cover, 6½" X 3½", cancelled in Capitan, New Mexico on 1984 August 13 and with "First Day of Issue" boldly stamped. Single 20-cent "Smokey" stamp at upper right. Fine. Large printed color cachet showing Smokey titled "After 40 Years / .still the same message!" above (and labeled "Official First Day Cover / National Association of State Foresters" below) at left. Near the center, in black fineline, Wendelin signs boldly and inkstamps "Stamp Designer" neatly below his signature. Small portion of original transmittal envelope also present.
