This Massachusetts governor (1880-83) and congressman (1883-89) is best known as President McKinley's Secretary of the Navy (1897-1902), in which capacity he modernized that department. Bold "Truly Yours / John D Long / Sec of the Navy / Aug 16 1898" in his sloppy hand penned on the blank verso of his heavy stock 3¼" X 1½" printed "The Secretary of the Navy" calling card. Very good. Lightly age toned. Accompanied by a superb steel-engraved portrait, heavy stock 5½" X 8", n.p., n.y. Very good. Lightly age toned. "Engd. by A.H. Ritchie" noted in fine print below this image, which is likely a book illustration or frontispiece of late 19th century vintage. Handsome head-and-shoulders image of an intense mustachioed Long in suit and tie, with facsimile signature beneath. An attractive pair. N° de ref. de la librería 31418
