Editorial: London: Cassell & Co. 1935

Año de publicación: 1935

FIRST EDITION. 8vo., pp. xi, 3-292 plus twelve appendices. Frontispiece of The Leader of the Expedition and 48 further b/w photographic illustrations, including two folding panoramas all by Andrew Croft. Four maps plus folding map of The Survey of the Expedition. Twelve line drawings by Frank Wilson. Original blue cloth, sound. Slight light stain to front cover. Interior is clean. Very slight foxing to fore-edges. In his book of the 1934 British Trans-Greenland Expedition Martin Lindsay writes there are few things more tedious than a record of geographical progression, apart from possibly the dull slogging of sledging. Being aware of this his book is therefore anything but tedious or dull. It is a fascinating insight into the detailed preparation and planning of an expedition as well as an exciting record of a remarkable achievement. Using dog sledges and carrying all their own food and equipment they were not only able to make the west to east crossing without harm, despite some atrocious weather, but also managed to make many scientific discoveries and surveys along their chosen route. It is a great tribute to four young and courageous Englishmen. N° de ref. de la librería 10178

Descripción de la librería: We specialise in travel, adventure and exploration books published between about 1900 and 1960, loosely referred to as post-imperialist travel writing. Although most books are the first-hand experiences of their authors, we have included books of general interest about a particular area or incident and autobiographies and biographies by and of famous travellers or adventurers. You will also find some books we consider of particular merit outside our somewhat arbitrary date range. Mark Culme-Seymour Proprietor
