Very scarce. Complete volume for the first year of publication of this weekly sporting newspaper, from Volume 1, Number 1, (30 May 1884) through to Volume 1, Number 26, (21 November 1884). Although a New Zealand publication, there is also considerable coverage given to the sporting activities of those other colonials across the Tasman Sea, the Australians. Several issues have columns on the progress of the fourth Australian Eleven Cricket team's tour of the UK, making in total a great number of column inches on this subject. Also includes articles on the New Zealand Football Team's tour to Australia; a weekly column "Impressions of Sport in Australia" by Sir Launcelot; a racing column "The Turf in Australia. Our Melbourne Letter (from our own correspondent)"; "The Stage in Victoria"; "Cricket Chat" by Dark Blue; "The New Zealand Footballers in Sydney" from our Auckland correspondent; "Football Facts" by Drop Kick; Cycling; Billiards; Athletics; Hunting; Fishing; The Drama. Includes advertisements. No illustrations. Text printed in three columns. Page dimensions: 425 x 280mm. Contemporary green cloth boards. Binder's ticket on front endpaper: "F. L. & H. J. Davis / Bookbinders / Cathedral Square / Christchurch". Title in gilt on front board: "New Zealand / Referee / Vol. 1. 1884". Some wear and tears to cloth at head and tail of spine. Moderate staining to boards. A couple of 30mm tears to the first leaf. A couple of leaves with large tears. Short tears to margins of some other leaves. Text complete without losses. Sporadic foxing. "The New Zealand Referee" was founded in 1884 by Phineas Selig and Arthur Edward Bird. "Sir Launcelot" was the pen-name of Bird.
