Joseph Lamson sailed to California in 1852 from Frankfort, Maine on the barque James W. Paige, rounding the Horn and arriving at San Francisco in early September. This record of his voyage is described by the Hill catalogue as dealing "more fully with the personalities aboard ship than many similar accounts." The concluding section of "California scenes" describes his experiences in Sacramento, the region's natural wonders, encounters with Indians, and rifle shooting, but has no mention of mining.
