Descripción:

SEEMINGLY UNRECORDED MANITOBA IMPRINT. Red pebbled wraps, black titles, border, device. 96 pp., numerous illus. throughout from b/w photos. Fr. wrap evenly sunned, 3" x 1" beverage stain, neat ink inscr. at bottom; worn at fold, staples rusting; pulp-paper yellowing; wraps dinged at corners; some short tears, still well-preserved, given its ephemeral nature. A WONDERFUL PAMPHLET!! Early W.W.II-era tribute to Gladstone, Manitoba & it's citizenry, prepared by the young people of the local United Church. Offers local social & cultural events of the Christmas Season, poetry, short stories, tributes from eminent citizens. Chiefly comprised of biographical sketches (including ages, family information, etc.) of all the local men who had enlisted for service in the CANADIAN ARMED FORCES, between 1939 - 1940, WITH ACCOMPANYING PHOTOGRAPHS (59 PHOTOGRAPHS IN TOTAL). At the rear is a 33 pp. history of the town, accompanied by photos. Wonderful local advertising throughout. Although this is the "Christmas Edition", it's unlikely that other editions exist: the foreword notes this publication is their first such effort & laments that the number of members had greatly declined at time of press due to all the young men signing up to go off to war, indicating that another edition of "The Pioneer" never occured. Likely unrecorded; near unique - not in Peel, not in NCL or NAC, not in UofM or UofWinnepeg catalogues. Precedes Fahrni & Morton by 6 years as the earliest monograph of Gladstone's history. Size: 6" x 10". N° de ref. de la librería 000512
