Boston-born sculptor active in that city post-Civil War until 1868, when he set up a studio in Florence; among his commissions were statues of Ralph Waldo Emerson, Junius Brutus Booth, John Hancock (Lexington town hall), Kamehameha the Great (National Statuary Hall, Washington, DC), "A Puritan" (Cambridge, MA) and "West Wind" (Mercantile Library, St. Louis). PS, 10" X 12", n.p., n.y. Very good. Mount moderately age toned and showing sporadic mild foxing. Handsome albumen print of Gould's full-length statue of John A. Andrew (1818-67), Civil War governor of Massachusetts, a handsome pose in Carrera marble showing Andrew in suit, a long flowing cape about his shoulders, left hand on hip. Below the image, on the mount, Gould's signs boldly in full in brown ink, adding "Sculptor" beneath. A most attractive sepia tone image, nicely signed by the sculptor. Unusual and scarce.
