THIRD EDITION, 1947. Slim 8vo., pp. 5-157 with preface by A. J. Arberry. Original olive green cloth sound/GOOD though quite badly light faded on head and tail of spine and front cover. Interior clean/NEAR FINE. Previous owner's inscription on front free endpaper. Persian Pictures is the first of Gertrude Bell's books written in 1892/3, and published anonymously in 1894. Although well received it was quickly forgotten but republished in this edition in 1928 by which time Gertrude Bell had become a famous traveller, writer, mountaineer, archaeologist and member of the British Secret Service. Persian Pictures followed her fist visit to her uncle, Sir Frank Lascelles, appointed Minister in Teheran, in the company of Lady Lascelles. The pictures are hence fresh and lively and depict a Persia (Iran) a world apart from that transformed by the Shah after the Second World War and torn apart by revolution and the establishment of the Islamic State in the late 1970's. From 1899 Gertrude Bell travelled extensively in Persia, Anatolia, and Syria. One of her most enterprising journeys was a fourteen-day crossing of the Syrian Desert in 1911. She was indefatigable and courageous and an Arab chief is reported to have said of her, "And if this is one of their women! Allah, what must their men be like!" N° de ref. de la librería 10068

Descripción de la librería: We specialise in travel, adventure and exploration books published between about 1900 and 1960, loosely referred to as post-imperialist travel writing. Although most books are the first-hand experiences of their authors, we have included books of general interest about a particular area or incident and autobiographies and biographies by and of famous travellers or adventurers. You will also find some books we consider of particular merit outside our somewhat arbitrary date range. Mark Culme-Seymour Proprietor
