Descripción:
139,iii,[1]pp., including in-text illustrations. Plus colored folding map and sixty-six photographs on fifty-eight mounts, each photograph with a printed caption. Half title. Thick quarto. Modern red calf, spine gilt, raised bands. A bit of foxing to the mounts, and some of the photographs slightly faded. Very good. A virtually unknown work of Filipino photographica, this book constitutes an important visual record of the Philippines, and of Spanish-led military activities against Muslim insurgents on the island of Mindanao. The present copy contains three times as many photographs as is usually found. Mindanao, the second largest island in the Philippines, has a large Muslim population which has waged separatist battles against a variety of conquerors - Spanish, American, Japanese, and Filipino, for centuries. Today, part of the island is controlled by the "Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao," which exercises a degree of political autonomy from the central government in Manila. All the action described and depicted in this volume took place in this heavily Muslim region. Perinat y Lasso de la Vega's work describes in words and photographs three months of military activities against the Muslim separatists on Mindanao. The text consists of daily entries covering the period from mid- January to late March of 1887, as well as a preface giving a history of the region. The photographs show Spanish-led troops of native Filipinos engaged in military activities against the local Muslims. The Filipino soldiers appear dressed in their distinctive uniforms, carrying rifles, and wearing helmets that look like inverted bowls. Many of the photos show military operations, soldiers marching, tents, huts, and buildings, and gun boats on the Rio Grande de Mindanao. One photograph shows soldiers carrying their wounded on stretchers through the jungle. Another photograph shows the "Necropolis de los Sultanes de Buhayan" and another is of the Christian church at Tamontaca. Several cities are depicted, including Cottabatto, Damabalas, Lintukan, Pagalungan, Kudaranga, and Bacat. Many of the photographs, beyond the first twenty called for by Palau, show scenes of regular life in the towns of Mindanao, though there is often a military presence depicted as well. OCLC locates only two copies, at Cornell and the Newberry Library. Palau calls for only twenty photographs, less than one-third the number contained in this copy. A rare and important photographic work showing what amounted to a civil war in the Philippines, as local troops trained by a foreign power battled against an indigenous Muslim insurgency. PALAU 223038. OCLC 64004603. N° de ref. de la librería WRCAM 37380
