Título: The Nile Boat; or, Glimpses of the Land Of ...
Editorial: London: Arthur Hall, Virtue, and Co., 1852
Año de publicación: 1852
Small quarto. Contemporary olive-green full morocco, richly gilt spine, gilt ornamental "architectural" border on sides, richly gilt turn-ins, all edges gilt, yellow endpapers. Lacking the front free endpaper, some light foxing to the plates, otherwise a good copy in a most attractive mid-Victorian binding. Steel-engraved vignette title, frontispiece, 30 plates of views, map of Egypt, folding panorama of Alexandria, map of Thebes, 17 wood-engravings in the text. First published in 1849. Bartlett (1809-1854) had travelled in Egypt in 1845, making sketches of the scenery, and the fine steel-engravings in The Nile Boat are by some of the leading engravers of the day, including Cousen, Brandard, and Willmore. "[Bartlett's] drawings. often possess charm and delicacy and reveal the author's understanding of landscape and his ability to use light and shade with effect to enliven his scene" (El-Mudarris & Salmon, Romantic Travel through Bartlett's Engravings: from Europe to the Middle East, 2007, p. 17).
