A wonderfully detailed, elegant and large scale map of Ireland by Herman Moll, arguably the foremost map producer in the early eighteenth century. Moll's map divides the country up into its four provinces of Ulster, Connaught, Munster and Leinster, then subdivides those provinces into their 32 individual counties. Moll provides a tremendous degree of cartographic detail within his map: all major roads are shown, along with prominent cities, larger towns and villages. Physical geographical features, such as mountains, lakes, rivers, and hills are all well defined and delineated. Moll features the five important regional town plans of Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, and Waterford. In addition there are inset maps of western Europe and St. Patrick's Purgatory Island, a place where he was sent once for a period of serious Christian contemplation. There is also a plan of Kinsale harbour and a view of the Giant's Causeway. There is a large table or "catalogue of the Towns and Places where Barracks are erected for the quartering of the standing army". Moll uses a an attractive boxed title and an elaborate dedication cartouche to the lord lieutenant, the Duke of Shrewsbury, as further embellishment. N° de ref. de la librería 65872
