NOTES RELATIVE TO THE TRANSACTIONS IN THE MARHATTA. Fort William, December 15, 1803. [Title page has only this information with no other printing details in the book. This is sometimes the case with printings which are not intended for general distribution or sale and often indicates a printing directly ordered by the Governor General] Folio [8 x 12ins]. 102pp, bound with "Appendix to the Notes relative to the Late Transactions." 6 hand coloured maps and plans [General Order of Battle at Camp of General Lake at Secundra. August 26th 1803; Battle of Assye fought September 23rd 1803; Sketch.Army under Lord Lake.Allyghur, August 29th 1803; Rough Representation of the Entrance of the Troops.Allyghur; Plan of the Battle of Delhi, 11th September 1803; Plan of the Battle of Lasswary 1st Novembe 1803], Appendix A "Note relative to the History and Constitution of Marhatta Empire, and to the Principal Chieftains composing the Marhatta Confederacy" 28pp, Appendix B single page with tabular representation of strength of Scindiah's forces under command of Monsieur Perroon, Appendix C Treaty of Bassein 12pp, Appendix D Calcutta Gazette Extraordinary [Despatches, casualty lists, returns, etc 126pp, Appendix E single page table of ordnance taken 8th August to 1st November 1803. Errata in the notes 1p. Contemporary crimson straight grain morocco gilt, spine with gilt decoration in panels and titled directly "Notes of the War in India 1803", both boards decorated with a distinctive fish design thought to have been used by the binder to the Moghul Court, original marbled endpapers. A blank after the front free endpaper has the inscription: "To The Right Honourable Lord Viscount Castlereagh President of the Board of Commissioners for the Affairs of India. Wellesley". This is highly important preliminary copy of this title which was sent to London by the Governor General before the still rare but fuller and more general Calcutta printing was made in 1804. It was later produced with some differences as a parliamentary paper. The plans apart from Delhi and Secundra are all shown as being engraved by F Dormieux, Calcutta and all but Delhi are additionally signed in sepia ink J Retso, H.M. 76th Reg fecit. The first plan of Lake's forces at Secundra is only printed in outline and all the troop details are entered in manuscript in sepia ink in Retso's hand. [Capt Retso appears in the Army Lists of the time as Ritso]. The lengthy Appendix D includes despatches sent from the war to the Governor General by commanders such as Maj-Gen Arthur Wellesley [Marquis Wellesley's younger brother and later Duke of Wellington], Gen Gerard Lake [commander in chief], Lt Col John Horsford [commanding Artillery in the field], Lt Col G A F Lake [Military Secretary], as well as despatches, returns and casualty lists from more junior staff officers to the generals. The use of the stylised fish motive in the decorative rolls around the edges of this binding suggest that it was produced by one of the binders who worked for the Mogul court. The fish, sometimes in a stylised form, was used on Mogul banners and appears in the arms of Muslim states such as Bhopal. There is a little staining to the rear board but the binding is in remarkably good order considering its age. Of course it would have spent hardly any time in the harsh Indian climate before it was sent to London. A most remarkable and desirable work. Size: Small Folio [18 x 12ins, 20 x 31cm].
