Errata slips pasted at end of Volumes I and II, tipped in at end of Volume VI. Spines darkened, boards lightly rubbed, top edges slightly toned, prelims and endmatter slightly tanned, bookmarks torn off and loosely inserted. Contemporary owner signature to front flyleaf of Volume I. An excellent library set. Engraved portrait frontispiece in Volume I. First edition of J. G. Lockhart's (1794–1854) most famous work. His biography of Sir Walter Scott has, since its publication, 'been regarded, along with Boswell's Life of Johnson, as one of the most important works in the history of biography' (ODNB). First Edition. 13 x 21cm Approx. 7 vols published separately between 1837 - 1838, ( Scott 1771-1832 & Lockhart 1794-1854) each with advert stating when each/next volume will be published , originally it was to be a set of only 6, but it is only when you get to 7th vol. that it states edited / by J.G Lockhart (his literary executor) but not on title pages but on 1st page of detailing each vol and exact date published (i.e. vol 1. 18th March 1837, vol 2. 1st May 1837 etc.) all vols in uniform dark red buckram ( original binding) with paper labels to spine, condition fair/good some minor edge rubbing , 2 tiny corner tip knocks & rubbed spine paper labels with some loss., Contents mostly very good and clean , a couple with one front/rear cover detached from contents ( covers not detached from spine). the rare minor fault like stain/fox but most pages clean, 1st owners name to front endpaper 1st vol, over 2,800 pages + publishers adverts. *** DUE TO A WEIGHT OF 4kilo UK & EU countries ONLY 13 x 21cm Approx. Book Condition: good; with Foxing to the flyleaf pages texts appears to be free of any foxing and minor rubbings to the boards this set has been priced accordingly, finely bound in three quarter brown leather calf over marble boards, five raised bands with a dark morocco gilt-blocked label, spine compartments uniformly tooled in gilt with books are tight, clean and bright with marbled edges. Top edge is gilt. No. 378 of 600 copies of the Large Paper edition. ohn Gibson Lockhart (12 June 1794 - 25 November 1854) was a Scottish writer and editor. He is best known as the author of a biography of his father-in-law Sir Walter Scott, which has been called the second most admirable in the English language, after Boswell's Life of Johnson. This is the Large Paper edition of 'Memoirs of the Life of Sir Walter Scott Bart.' by John Gibson Lockhart. This set was published by Houghton, Mifflin and Company at The Riverside Press in 1901 and is No. 378 of 600 copies of the Large Paper edition. The books are bound in 3/4 brown morocco leather with 5 raised bands and gilt titles and designs. Each volume has a sepia photograph and two frontispieces [one colored]. Additional illustrations throughout. The books are in Near Fine condition with bookseller notes in pencil on the front free endpaper of volume one. Volume 2 has a 1/2 inch by 1 inch "tidemark" at the top of the first 4 or 5pages (endpapers). The covers of volume two and the covers of vol. four are slightly warped. Otherwise an excellent set. Sets of this edition all include a handwritten letter by the author, John Gibson Lockhart mounted at the beginning of volume one. THIS copy has a letter addressed to artist William Allan in 1831. Several pieces of William Allan's art hang in Abbottsford [Home of Sir Walter Scott] and his famous portrait of Walter Scott hangs at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery - National Galleries of Scotland.
