Descripción:

19 cm. viii, 194 pp. with 7 text illustrations, 1 folding plate, 1 folding map, [6 pp. publisher's advertisements]. With 2 additional tipped-in cloth backed charts. * Orig. red cloth with gilt title on spine and upper board. In a privately hand-sewn beige cloth chemise. Some damp-staining to boards, slightly foxing to endpapers, some pencil underlinings, ownership entry on paste-down and private name stamp on free endpaper. Chemise dirt-stained and browned. * After service in the British North Borneo Company from 1889 to 1897, Applin (1869 - 1957) served in the British Army until 1921. From 1906 until 1911 he was Deputy Assistant Adjutant General for Musketry in Malta. 'During this period he was involved in developing tactics for the use of the machine gun, and in 1909 published one of the first books on the subject, Machine Gun Tactics. During the First World War Applin became an instructor in the use of the machine gun, and was attached to the Machine Gun Corps Training Centre in July 1916. In November 1916 he was appointed temporary lieutenant-colonel, and commanded the machine guns of the II ANZAC Corps at the battles of Messines and Passchendaele. * This copy of Applin's book belonged to Australian machine gunner John Russell Jones of the 12th Battalion Machine Gun Corps of the B.E.F. [British Expeditionary Force]. It has his signatures and his later private name stamp on the endpapers. Jones was wounded at Messines Ridge in June 1916 and again at Passchendaele in September 1917. He was demobilised unfit and returned to Australia in December 1919. Jones had Law degree from Sydney University (see the Beyond 1914 website of the university). He later worked as a solicitor in Sydney (see his stamp). * Tipped-in at the back are two folding linen-backed machine gun range charts issued in April and May 1917. The first 50 pages of the book contain numerous pencil underlinings and a few marginal notes. N° de ref. de la librería 03469
