Small 8vo. calf & marbled boards half-bound. Raised bands. Two labels on spine. Some fading of front board, which is attached but loose.Spine present but loose. Corners slightly bumped. It bears signature of George Peel, a relative of Sir Robert Peel, and his blind stamp. The life of Watt is 105pp. It is followed by an essay by Arago ( in English) 'On Machinery considered in relation to the prosperity of the working classes' (pp106-123), then Eulogium of James Watt ' by Lord Jeffrey (pp125-130) then 'Historical Account of the Discovery of the Composition of Water' by Lord Brougham (pp131-142) then bound in is 'Proceedings of the Public Meeting held at the Freemasons' Hall 18th June 1824 for erecting a monument to the late James Watt, pub by Murray 1824 96pp, then 'Remarks on certain statements regarding the Invention of the Steam Engine in M Arago's Historical Eloge of James Watt' by Hugo Reid, pub 1811 by Robert Stuart 68pp. Light foxing on prelims. Likely collected together by George Peel. The 'statue' movement had a committee comprising by the very top names in British parliamentary and industrial life at that time .
