OFFERING: "The Original Kiss Drawings", a picture letter sent to staff and contributors at MAD. Illustrating the collegial working atmosphere, it begins with a work update for Jerry DeFuccio and ends with eight valediction drawings with theme of "What is my response to a kiss from Sergio?", each done for a prominent MAD staff member or contributor, seven displayed as a continuous strip on the rear. Each drawing shows an affectionate Sergio kiss and the comic response of the recipient. PORTRAITS: 1) Jerry DeFuccio (Associate Editor), as a model of patience / 2) Lenny Brenner (Chief Production Consultant) goggle-eyed, with hair standing on end / 3) Nick Meglin (Contributing Editor), as satyr, panting with extended tongue / 4) Al Feldstein (Editor), kissed-on the back of the head-he grimaces, teeth bared / 5) Bill Gaines (Publisher) yelps in mock resignation / 6) John Putnam (Art Director), closely embraced, waits in shock, for his release / 7) Antonio Prohias (known for his "Spy vs. Spy" feature (and a mentor to Aragonés)) blissfully smiles, eyes closed, as if remembering something sweet / Al Jaffee (known for his rear fold-in, and regular feature, "Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions" (and much admired by Aragonés)) smacks Sergio with a roundhouse to the jaw, captioned, "Soc!"; no fold-in from Al. CONDITION: Bright and clean, customary mailing folds; never mounted; a bottom corner crease, two tips with gentle creases, one tip with trace bend; a few fingering impresses, chiefly at bottom edge. LETTER: Handwritten, 17 lines with 5 corrections, signing off "Smack! Love" + the 8 valediction kiss drawings; done in pen & red ink on both sides of a 10.9 x 8.4 inches sheet, English, except for date (August 21, 1967) in Spanish, sited at Palma on the island of Majorca. The letter is addressed to Jerry DeFuccio and his portrait is unnamed. An arrow at the foot points to the strip's continuation on the rear where a heading names the seven others receiving a goodbye: four are mentioned in the letter. CONTENTS: Aragonés posted from the island of Majorca, where he was vacationing with his wife and recovering from the 'flu'. Now feeling better, he tells Jerry DeFuccio he is drawing, again, and New York can expect, soon, more of his marginals; his MAD feature, "crammed with crowds of silly people doing silly things". [Evanier] He requests art supplies from Lenny Brenner; cheerily mentions John Putnam's visit to the island; references sending an early version of "What is a Square" and asks for feedback on cells Al Feldstein has approved (feature in June 68 issue, no. 119), suggesting MAD feature writer, Tom Koch could do an allied feature, "What is a Sucker?", for which he would do the artwork. SERGIO ARAGONÉS [1937-]: began drawing for MAD shortly after coming to New York City in 1962, from Mexico. A prolific contributor, he had two longtime features, "A Mad Look At", and his celebrated, marginals. In 1967 he began work at DC comics, including on "Bat Lash". But beyond his MAD artwork, he is principally known for, "Groo the Wanderer", a series done in collaboration with Mark Evanier from 1981. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Shazam (1972), Harvey (9 times since 1990), National Cartoonist Society Comic Book Award (1986), and the Reuben (1996).
