509 pp. Red cloth over boards in very good plus condition with only a tiny and barely noticeable darker spot on rear cover and the slightest wrinkling on center spine that do not affect the title. The interior is clean and crisp throughout. The book treats the astronomical background of the possibility of life on other planets, the nature of life and its possible occurrence in our solar system and the possibility that advanced communicative technical civilizations exist on pllanets of other stars, as well as the psychological perils of the study of extraterrestrial life. The authors are scientists Carl Sagan of Harvard Univerity and Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory and J. S. Shklovskii of Sternberg Astronomical Institute and Soviet Academy of Sciences. "As the reader might expect for a book written by two authors, one in the Soviet Union and one in the United States, there are occasional ideological differences. I have not tried to avoid these problems, but I also have not tried, in what is a primarily a scientific work, to rebut each ideological assertion." (Preface by Sagan) Nonetheless, these two prominent scientists shared deep respect for each other's scientific work and insights. Size: Octavo. N° de ref. de la librería 025176

Descripción de la librería: The Chatham Bookseller began in 1968, and, in 1970, opened a store at its present location in Madison, New Jersey. The store contains over 10,000 books and 80 subjects, and favors good used books and good literature over popular books and bestsellers. The store carries hardcover and paperbacks. Our Internet business began in 2001. The approximately 4,000 Internet books and pamphlets are kept on the premises, but cannot be viewed as a whole. However, we can show and sell individual titles upon request. If you can call ahead, it would be appreciated. Unless you have called ahead, we cannot show Internet books on Sundays. We appreciate all of our customers and try to serve them well and fulfill their special needs. The store hours are 9-5:30 Tuesday through Friday except 6:30 on Thursday, 10:00 to 5:00 on Saturday and 12-5 on Sunday. The business is owned and operated by Richard Chalfin and Kathy Rodgers
