Título: The Independent Navigator, or Mariner's Best...

Editorial: Liverpool: by D. Marples, for Hamilton, Adams, & Co., London, and sold by J. W. Norie & Co., 1828

Año de publicación: 1828

Edición: 1st Edition

Octavo (214 × 132 mm). Original publisher's half sheep on reddish boards, paper label to the upper board. Somewhat browned, hinges cracked but holding, title page slightly smaller and near detached, series of ownership inscriptions and a couple of crude pencil sketches of ships to the endpapers, rubbed, about very good. Folding table laid on linen as frontispiece, tables to the text. First and only edition. As suggested by the sub-title, Mulligan - who styles himself "Teacher of Navigation and Mental Astronomy, by a New and Approved System" - suggests that he has found a revolutionary short-cut to complex navigational problems. "The small Treatise here submitted to the attention of the Public contains a new and useful Construction, comprising in one view all the principles of Spherical Trigonometry, and several useful calculations in the science of Navigation, never before published, or laid down in so compendious a manner; peculiarly calculated to assist the mariner, where necessity requires it, and indeed indispensable to all seafaring persons." In order to counter accusations of presumption he has submitted the system to "several seafaring gentlemen, who have had many years' experience" and has "been much gratified with the way in which they have given their respective signatures of approbation and become Subscribers to the volume. " A three-page subscribers list contains 130 names, together with their ships and home ports, showing a good proportion from Canada and the United States. Charles Purnell, dock master of George's dock, Liverpool, took six copies. Scarce, not on COPAC, no copy in BL or NMM, OCLC locates a single copy at Yale. N° de ref. de la librería 43683
