iv, 316 pages; purple cloth binding by the publisher, some cracking on the inside of the back hinge. Some wear to the outside cover. Abbie Gardner (1843-1921) at 13 witnessed the 'Spirit Lake Massacre' in Iowa August 8, 1856. A band of Sioux under Inkpaduta killed 33 settlers in the area. Abbie, a survivor, was held hostage for a year . In the 1880s she moved into the family cabin and turned it into a museum which supported her the rest of her life. Very good clean copy.
