Título: The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abyssinia...
Editorial: Printed for John Sharpe, [Duke Street], Piccadilly; by C. Whittingham, Chiswick,
Año de publicación: 1822
Edición: 1st Edition
16mo., First Westall Edition, with engraved and printed titles, and 3 engraved plates after Westall, some mild offsetting from plates to facing pages and some minimal age-staining, neat early nineteenth century signature on blank preliminary; most attractively bound in mid-nineteenth century pale red calf, sides with gilt frame border within which is a quintuple gilt frame border stopped at corners by gilt rosette, the whole enclosing a stylised floral pattern elaborately blocked in blind, back gilt with eight raised bands ruled in gilt, two compartments with black leather labels lettered in gilt, other compartments richly tooled in gilt, marbled edges, boards-edges and doublures tooled in gilt to a stylised floral pattern, marbled endpapers, joints lightly rubbed else a splendid bright, clean copy in unrestored period binding. The earliest Whittingham/Chiswick Press edition was apparently 1806 (see Courtney, p.89) after which that well-known house produced several editions for various consortia of leading booksellers. Surprisingly, however, neither Courtney nor Chapman mentions this edition; indeed, they record no Westall edition at all of Rasselas. The engraved title-vignette and two plates were engraved by Robinson, the third plate by Finden. The engraved title and all plates are dated 1823. A most attractive copy, ideal as a gift or for presentation. N° de ref. de la librería 7395
