Frontispiece [Cabul Gate at Ghuznee], xxxviii, 445pp, 24pp publisher's lists. Original cloth gilt, a little marked and bumped at the corners but genrally a very good example of this rather difficult to find contemporary account of the ffirst Afghan War. The contents are clean, a few pages uncut, There are no previous ownership marks although some contemporary pencil note about the campaign has been mainly rubbed away from a blank, one gathering [pp231-234] is loose from the stitching. The general [1812-1871] was a Bengal Engineer and headed the party that blew open the Cabul Gate at Ghuzni. He later served as privagte secretary to the Governor General Lord Ellenborough. He served in the Sikh War and was later Political Agent at both Gwalior and Bhopal. He died in a strangely sad incident at Tonk when his Howdah was crushed as it passed through the arch of a city gateway. His work on was published posthumously and brought to press by his son, Sir Henry Mortimer Durand who was Political Secretary to lord Roberts during the Second Afghan War. Size: 8vo.
