Contemporary dark green plain Half Leather, Marbled Boards, similar marbled endpapers, and all edges marbled. Five raised bands gilt dotted, burgundy label with bright gilt titling. 'Signed' Binding, stamped on the top reverse of the ffep - J. Haines. Half Title. Tissue guarded title page with b/w illustration. viii + 360 pp. Light foxing spots but only to the plain prelims and endpapers. This book covers History and Historical Biography, the English Poets, the Essayists, The rise of Drama, Dramatic literature, the Bible and its translators, Theologians, letters and letter-writing, The Satirists, Scottish Poets, Political and metaphysical writers, the British Novelists, English periodical Essayists, Poets of the Present Century - Byron, Scott, Worsworth and Coleridge, Shelley, Keats, Landor, Barry Cornwall, Crabbe, & Thomas Hood, Burns, Campbell, etc. Friswell (1825-1878) was extremely popular in his day; his 'The Gentle Life' (1864), a collection of "essays in aid of the formation of character," went through 25 editions over a period of 15 years (one of them dedicated "by desire" to Queen Victoria). Friswell had a particular interest in the plight of the working classes, and his efforts to reform cheap literature for boys was to some extent responsible for the demise of the more lurid "Penny Dreadfuls."; 50360; 8vo.
