Descripción
FIRST EDITION. 8 vo. Orig. cloth. 4(pub. cat. dated Oct. 1860), xii, 739 pp. Numerous woodcuts in the text, many of apparatus. Ends of spine a bit chipped, even light browning; still, a very good copy. "Cooke (1827-94) can be considered the founder of Harvard's department of chemistry." (D.S.B.). A student of Regnault, Cooke was Erving professor of chemistry and mineralogy at Harvard. "His ideas with respect to the numerical relations between atomic weights and the properties of elements foreshadowed the periodic system of Mendelejeff and Lothar Meyer." (Moore, F.J., 'Hist. chem.', 1939). His modern-styled text of physical chemistry has an extensive illustrated section on crystallography. One of Cooke's best known students was Theodore W. Richards (1868-1928), the 1914 Nobel laureate in chemistry. Miles, W.D., 'Amer. chemists and chem. eng.', 1976, pp.91-92. Smith Coll., p.120. Bolton I.376 - London, 1886 only.
