The joints are partially cracked; a very good, clean and crisp set. The German mathematician, Felix Klein (1849-1925), was ".the greatest synthesist that geometry has ever known." (J.L. Coolidge, 'Hist. geometric methods', 1940). D.M.Y. Sommerville, 'Biblio. of non-euclidean geometry' (1970), pp. 46 and 110 describes the present set of lectures as an elaboration of Klein's influential 1872 "Erlanger Programm". "The essence of the 'Erlanger Programm' is that every geometry known so far is based on a certain group, and the task of the geometry in question consists in setting up the invariants of this group." (D.S.B.). "The work of Klein is in a sense a fitting climax to 'The Heroic Age in Geometry', for he taught and lectured for half a century. So contagious was his enthusiasm that some late-nineteenth century figures were willing to prophesy that not only geometry, but all of mathematics, ultimately would be comprised within the theory of groups." (C.B. Boyer, 'Hist. math.', 1968, p.593). D.S.B.7: 396-400. M. Kline, 'Math. thought from ancient to modern times', 1972, pp. 917-920.
