Título: Early Greek Poetry and Philosophy. A history...
Condición del libro: Antiquarian
Basil Blackwell, Oxford, 1975. XII,555p.Paperback. Spine with a few light reading traces. Nice copy. Translation of 'Dichtung und Philosophie des frühen Griechentums', translation by M. Hadas and J. Willis.'This is 'Geistesgeschichte' of the best kind, combined with careful analysis of the style of the works dealt with and their relation to the context of their time, and carried out by a scholar who combines the highest technical proficiency with great clarity of presentation and real imaginative sympathy with the ancient world. Unlike many very learned men, Fränkel is not afraid of personal judgements and bold generalizations; and his attitude contrasts refreshingly with the caginess of many historians of ancient literature. (.) to me the sections about Homer and Pindar seemed especially valuable. (.) Perhaps the greatest value of this important book for English-speaking readers lies in the way in which it exploits the study of characteristic modes of expression and their adaptation by successive generations of Greek writers.' (HUGH LLOYD-JONES on the German 2nd rev.ed. in The Classical Review (New Series), 1964, pp.209-10). From the library of the late Prof. W. Geoffrey Arnott. Antiquarian. N° de ref. de la librería 25914

Descripción de la librería: Scrinium Classical Antiquity, member of the Dutch Association of Antiquarian Booksellers (NVvA - ILAB), stands for a specialized stock of new, secondhand and antiquarian books about Classical Antiquity. The main theme of our books is Classical Antiquity: texts and commentaries, translations, archeology, philosophy, travel, history, mythology, books for young people, philology, law, reception of classical motives in Middle Ages, Renaissance and our own time and neo-Hellenika (conptemporary Greece), and many more subjects. A more modest quantity of our books concerns countries, civilisations and religious movements on the edges of the classical world: e.g. Egypt, Middle East and Early Christianity. New books are partly in stock, partly to be ordered from publishers. We are connected to a large number of publishers and distributors, established both in the Netherlands and abroad.
