Título: ELEPHANT BILL
Editorial: London: Rupert Hart-Davis 1950
Año de publicación: 1950
FIFTH IMPRESSION, 1950. 8vo., pp. 7-320. Frontispiece of A Young Male Calf and His Mother. Forty-one b/w photographic illustrations by the author, Muir Wright, Fish Herring, John Booth and Peter Bankes. Two drawings by John Bruce from sketches by the author. A general map of Burma in the text plus two maps of Japanese attacks during World War II. Original green cloth, a little worn on the edges, but sound. Interior clean. This is the book that made not only Lt-Col. Williams famous, but almost as importantly the elephants of Burma he helped to look after and train for more than twenty years. Elephants and men have about the same life expectancy, and the Burmese who worked with the animals could quite often become life-long friends, companions and working partners. Most of the period covered by the book is that between the two World Wars, but the elephants played a remarkable role helping the XIVth Army build bridges during the Second World War and, as Field-Marshall Sir William Slim writes in his Foreword, launch more ships for the Army than Helen ever did for Greece. They were an invaluable help in the Army's retreat from Burma after the Japanese invasion, and in the subsequent liberation in 1945. N° de ref. de la librería 10293

Descripción de la librería: We specialise in travel, adventure and exploration books published between about 1900 and 1960, loosely referred to as post-imperialist travel writing. Although most books are the first-hand experiences of their authors, we have included books of general interest about a particular area or incident and autobiographies and biographies by and of famous travellers or adventurers. You will also find some books we consider of particular merit outside our somewhat arbitrary date range. Mark Culme-Seymour Proprietor
