No Date ascribed to the book but from internal evidence and the records in the British Library this is 1899. Quarter bound with a maroon cloth spine and pictorial paper covered thin boards ( Front cover = Monocrome photo of a Victorian gentleman on a Bicycle - presume Robert Luis Jefferson? . Rear cover = Tyre Advert - "As used by Mr R. L. Jefferson. F. R. G. S. On his great Continental rides to Siberia and Khiva" ) The boards and hinges are all sound but the paper boards are marked /scratched and rubbed. All extremities are a little worn. Internally the bottom blank edge of the pages are LIGHTLY damp-stained - but it is difficult to see this after the first few pages. There is some fairly light foxing (brown spotting/patching) here and there throughout the book, one page is slightly loose and sitting a little 'proud' of the others with rougher edges but overall the book, the text and illustrations are generally clean and tight. No Inscriptions or other Marks. (8) + 198 pp + (14 pp Adverts) + Adverts on the front and rear pastedowns. There are even occasional adverts - for cycling items - in the body of the book. As many of them are 'endorsing' Mr. Jefferson's travels on a bicycle I assume this was a way of getting sponsorship for both his travels and the books. Illustrated with 20 b/w full page plates -drawings by Harry Evans. As with many Victorian Travels ' The Continent ' is not just France and its near neighbours but Mr. Jeffersons bicycle travels take him to France and Southern Switzerland, then on to Carniola (? ) , Croatia and Slavonia, The Balkans, Turkey, Poland, Across the Urals and back through the South of France and Monte Carlo. Overall a Clean, Tight copy which is complete in all respects, it's just a little 'tired' and which probably deserves better than the 'Fair' I've given it - in 'older times' bookdealer parlance this copy would have been called 'Good', but to the 'lay' book person I think 'good' - sounds just too 'good'! . A Very Scarce ORIGINAL1899 copy of a fascinating Victorian Travel book. Images available on Request. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall. N° de ref. de la librería 111844
