Descripción:

Octavo. Original brown vertical fine-ribbed cloth, spine and upper cover decorated and lettered gilt, sides stamped in blind, green endpapers, gilt edges. Red morocco folding case, spine lettered gilt. Ownership inscription of William Powell, 1843, at head of half-title, the number 56 inscribed in a similar hand on the front pastedown. Spine rubbed at ends, cloth at two corners just worn through, short split at head of front joint, hinges just cracked, slight lean, endpapers smudged as usual, still a very good copy. Hand-coloured etched frontispiece and 3 plates after Leech. First edition, first issue, with "Stave I" on the first page of text and green endpapers. These handcoloured endpapers, Dickens's original choice for his lavish gift book, proved a disappointment. The colour dusted off and smudged, so the endpapers were changed to yellow, not requiring hand work. Probably in the middle of binding, as demand grew faster than the current endpaper stock, it was decided to use up the green paper, and thereafter it was used indiscriminately with yellow, but discarded again when the initial supply of green became exhausted. Primary copies therefore occur with either green or yellow endpapers, some collectors preferring green as the author's original pre-publication choice. Smith II, 4; Eckel pp. 110–15.
