Año de publicación: 1958
FIRST EDITION. 8vo., pp. xv, 1-294 plus glossary, appendices and index. Endpaper maps of Antarctica and the expedition's route. Nine maps and illustrations. Extensive list of photographs in both colour and b/w. Original blue cloth, sound apart from small bruise to bottom corner of cover. Interior clean. Dust jacket a little frayed on edges. Post-war England provided the impetus for a number of successful explorations and adventures. Sir John Hunt and his expedition team conquered Mount Everest 1953, and here we have Sir Vivien Fuchs and Sir Edmund Hillary achieving the first crossing of Antarctica in 1957 and 1958. Although Amundsen had actually reached the South Pole in 1911, no one had made the crossing from the Ross Sea to the Weddell Sea. Fuchs and Hillary used eight vehicles, sledges, two dog teams and two years of preparation and reconnaissance to challenge and conquer one of the great unexplored regions of the world. People now visit the area in cruise ships. This book is a reminder that what these visitors are now seeing was once one of the most dangerous and inaccessible places on earth. Descripción de la librería: We specialise in travel, adventure and exploration books published between about 1900 and 1960, loosely referred to as post-imperialist travel writing. Although most books are the first-hand experiences of their authors, we have included books of general interest about a particular area or incident and autobiographies and biographies by and of famous travellers or adventurers. You will also find some books we consider of particular merit outside our somewhat arbitrary date range. Mark Culme-Seymour Proprietor
