Complete in 41 volumes, the last four published 1788-1789 in Geneva (Supplements) in large format, with 120 copper-engraved plates by Pierre-Clement Marillier; woodcut head- and tail-pieces throughout. Large 8vo format, each volume complete with half-title; contemporary polished tan calf, covers gilt-ruled, spines gilt with series title, individual volume number and contents, and fleur-de-lis decorations (general light rubbing, occasional scrapes or nicks but nevertheless a handsome set). First edition, first issue as originally produced in Amsterdam 1785-1786, also including the last four volumes printed in Geneva in large 8vo format to match the original printing (whereas Geneva also reprinted the entire thirty-seven volumes as 12mo when they produced their supplement). A veritable "encyclopédie" of 17th and 18th century fairy tale literature including the classic Mother Goose tales of Perrault (Vol 1), the contes des fées of Madame d’Aulnoy (Vols 2-4, 6), the "Arabian Nights" tales translated by Antoine Galland (Vols 7-11), "Beauty and the Beast" by Madame Le Prince de Beaumont (Vol 35), as well as hundreds of lesser known tales originally printed in editions that are now quite obscure, and whose survival is largely the result of having appeared in this collection. In addition to the tales themselves, there is a considerable amount of useful documentation in the form of advertisements and notices, as well as an entire volume (#37) containing biographies of all the fairy tale authors plus a "Discours sur l’Origine des Contes des Fées" written by the editor, Charles-Joseph Mayer. The final 4 volumes issued in Genève supplement the text with "La Suite des Mille et Une Nuits, Contes Arabes". The Cabinet was compiled just prior to the French Revolution, and it has been noted that the whole project is marked by a strong sense of nostalgia (see The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales, p314). Marillier’s fine illustrations comprise one of the most extensive (and finest) series of fairy tale illustrations ever executed by a single artist. Gordon Ray notes that he "was a thorough professional, and in his extended series of plates for Le Cabinet des Fées, he maintained a high level of proficiency" (PML French Illustration, p81). The engravings are superbly printed on thick paper, though several have had some kind of chemical reaction in the blank margins creating mild discoloration. Brunet I, 1440; Graesse II, 2.
