Sobre Bruno Scarfe
Bruno Scarfe, Cadiz, Spain.
We offer mainly fiction, poetry and drama, and some non-fiction. Most books are in English or French, a few in German or Spanish. There are plenty of first, special, limited and numbered editions, some signed ones, and many standard ones.
Most items are from the library of Professor Francis Scarfe (1911-1986), D.Litt., F.R.S.L., C.B.E., Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur. Critic, novelist, poet, scholar and translator, he was Senior Lecturer at the University of Glasgow, and then for 20 years Director of the British Institute in Paris. He published four collections of poetry and three novels, but is known best for his pioneering critical study 'Auden and after' (1942) reprinted many times, and his scholarly 'The art of Paul Valéry' (1954) and 'André Chénier' (1965). His translations include Aragon, Bazin, Cocteau, La Fontaine, Jean and Simonne Lacouture, Maillard, Seuphor and Valéry, but his translations of Baudelaire brought him most success, with the 1961 Penguin and the 1986 & 1989 Anvil editions all seeing successive reprints.
We hope this summary will place the books from Francis Scarfe's library in a proper perspective, and that his signature and notes - usually pencilled - will be appreciated as evidence of an artist's and scholar's esteem for them.
Antecedents for this book business can be found in rural Victoria, Australia, with "Bruno's Bookshop", Foster, and the "Octagon Bookshop", Omeo, spanning the period 1980-1997. These businesses, however, dealt in new books, and there was no electronic outlet. Antecedents for handling old or rare books can be found in the sale and donation of 2,000 Spanish dramatic items (dated 1604-1900) to the University of Glasgow Library in 2003, where they are listed as the "Scarfe - La Trobe Collection" in acknowledgement of the University of La Trobe's assistance with research. Work on the Collection continues, both in Cadiz and Glasgow.
